How We Plan the Box

Every Friday we update this page with a tentative list of what is going to be in the box the following week. We’ll do our best to stick to this list for each week, but sometimes we may have to make substitutions for various reasons. For the most part the list will be accurate (or mostly accurate) so it should help if you are wanting to plan your menus and grocery shopping for the coming week.

Box contents for the week of  May 30th

  • Radishes or Japanese turnips
  • Pea Shoots
  • Kale
  • Carrots
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Lettuce head
  • Pac Choi
  • Bell Pepper

How We Plan the Box

Planning the box is a fun and challenging puzzle each week. During the lean times of the year (winter and early spring), Julie makes a well-rounded box from roots, storage crops, frozen treats, and hearty greens. She has to ration her favourites to make sure we have enough to last until spring, while also considering that the longer crops stay in storage or in the field, the higher the risk of losses due to rotting, splitting, or bolting.

Summer and fall present an entirely different challenge. Julie will often have 20 different veggies to choose from, and has to decide which selection will be the best. Some customers would prefer larger quantities of fewer items, while others may prefer to try small amounts of many crops. Some are traditionalists, while others want the most unusual varieties we can grow. Julie considers the price of each item as she balances different colours, textures, shapes, and flavours.
