Farm Update - April 8, 2024

Have you been curious about what we're up to up at Saanich Organics as the growing season ramps up? We've been busy planting tons of seeds in our greenhouse, affectionately named Long John, to regrow our seed stock for next year!

On March 20th, Keira - the farm manager for Seeds of the Revolution - planted a huge array of varieties. Here's our full list of what was started in trays in the greenhouse at the end of May:

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Eggplants
  • Tomatillos
  • Onions
  • Leeks
  • Violas
  • Yarrow
  • Coreopsis
  • Cosmos
  • Sweet Peas
  • Calendula
  • Marigold
  • Genovese Basil
  • Holy Basil

Keira also seeded the salad bed in Long John with mustard and salad greens at the end of March, and the greens as well as all those listed above have now sprouted and are looking beautiful.

We have some large Abundant Bloomsdale spinach plants that are getting close to bolting now too, these are being grown out for seed to restock or spinach seeds that we completely sold out of this year! It's one of our most popular greens at markets.

Our final update is on the onions that we planted out in January. We had sets that we had saved from last year, so they're growing out for their second year this summer meaning they'll go to seed (as onions are biennial). The flowers are starting to form which means seeds are not too far on the horizon!
