Seeds to Start in April - Southern Vancouver Island

Living in Victoria, Saanich, Metchosin, or elsewhere in the Southern Vancouver Island region means you have an exceptionally long growing season. Despite this, we don't get temperatures as high as places in the interior! This means we have to be particular about what seeds we are starting and when... so we put together a guide to our Seeds of the Revolution seeds and which ones you should start this month - April.

Victoria proper is considered zone 8, but this list generally applies to the entire region of Coastal British Columbia.

Seeds you can start indoors this month include:

Eggplant

  • Get these started earlier this month rather than later, so they have time to mature before transplanting them out in June

Peppers

  • Same as for eggplant, you want to start your pepper seeds early this month so that you can transplant them outdoors in June

Tomatoes

  • These can be transplanted any time in late May or most of June - so you'll want to start them early this month too

Squash

  • You can start squash later in the month of April through to early May, then you'll transplant them out in late May. You can also direct sow your squash seeds in late May through early June if you'd prefer!

Seeds you can direct sow this month include:

  • Arugula
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Corn salad
  • Cress
  • Kale
  • Mustard
  • Onions (and transplant the ones you started indoors)
  • Parsnips
  • Peas
  • Radish
  • Spinach
  • Chard (later in the month)
  • Turnips
