Farmer Feature - Heather Stretch

Name: Heather Stretch

Farm name: Northbrook Farm

Where did you grow up? Edmonton

How did you first get into farming/growing? In my early 20’s my aunt and uncle called and offered me the opportunity to come farm this land (which they co-owned with my grandmother)

When did you start farming for a living? 2001

What’s your favourite plant to harvest seeds from? Why? Lillie Mae’s Little White Cucumbers because the harvesting is fun, easy, stinky, and slimy, and because the cucumber variety has been a family favourite of my husband since his childhood in North Carolina.

What’s a fun fact about you? I love singing in a community choir.

What’s your favourite thing about being a farmer? The seasonal changes.  No matter how badly things suck, they’ll change soon.

What else would you like people to know about you, your life, or your farm? The best thing about Northbrook is the incredible people who have come through the farm over the years.  They have all contributed so much to the farm and to my life, and because of them my sons had the chance to grow up with diverse and wonderful adult friends and role models.
